Our regular video series How Fast Is…? examines real world websites and details the cause of their performances issues as well as what should be done to solve them. After all, the best way to learn about front-end web performance is to see what other people are doing right and doing wrong. In this edition of How Fast Is…? we analyze FIFA’s World Cup Website.

Why FIFA.com?

I chose the FIFA’s World Cup website for a few reasons. First, the website uses lots of images and rich media to help website visitors imagine they are actually at the games. Rich content can create a great immersive experience, but traditionally developers and designers do not optimize this content properly. Next, the World Cup is truly a world event. Lots of people will be accessing this website from around the world. Additionally, the website will receive far more visitors during the weeks of the World Cup than any other time. This makes from some interesting traffic spikes from visitors across national boundaries.

This unique mix of rich content and traffic access patterns makes for a great case study in front-end web performance. I hope you enjoy our video How Fast Is… FIFA’s World Cup Website?.
